How to talk to your kid about the fire
Honest, simple, age-right ways to talk about the fire.
What helps
- Start by asking what they already know or worry about, and follow their lead.
- Be honest, but keep it simple and right for their age. You don't have to explain everything.
- Don't flood them with details or scary images.
- Let them know their feelings make sense and that you're there.
- It's okay to say "I don't know." It's okay for them to see you have feelings too, as long as you stay steady.
Why this matters
Kids cope better when a calm adult listens honestly and consistently, and when they feel safe asking questions. You don't need the perfect words. You need to be steady and present.
